I was born 29 years ago in Kangari location Murang'a county.Am a father of one. I grew up in the village where my mum and my late father were small scale farmers. I got my education up to high school level. After my certificates I was not able to proceed to college because my other siblings were also in school and my mum single handedly could not afford. After high school I helped my mum in farming for two years after which I got a casual job in the capital Nairobi. The company didn't offer any unskilled personnel a parmanent job. So I decided to save for college fees. After two years I had not saved enough for the fees and I decided to venture in strawberry farming and I stopped working to concentrate on farming. I like farming, playing badmitton and hanging out with kids.
I grow strawberry for commercial services in farm upcountry. strawberries are high demand fruits in kenya and the globe as a whole.
I harvest my fruits thrice a week. I pack my strawberries in punnets of quater kg for sale in the market in the capital Nairobi. One punnet sells for an average of one dollar so one kg is around four dollars.
Every month I harvest an average of three hundred kgs. I fetch a gross of 1200 dollars a month. Though is a good income but it comes with lots of expenses and risks including, cost of buying new plants, plants/fruits diseases and pests and their control, packanging costs, labour and the risk of travelling late hours of the night to reach the market plus price fractuasions.
By end month remain with something to keep my family going, visit the less fortunate in the society and also train my fellow youths how to venture in the strawberry bussiness.
I also ventured in Graphic design and bought an operating business through a loan from Zidisha.
I am grand to have joined zidisha my life is changing to the best. I have even started on teaching youth on the strawberries venture. Thanks to the lenders that i can see some changes in my farm and earnings.
My borehole is doing great the is no one time i don't have water for my plants and domestic use but the hand pulley have made blisters on my hand.
This time am borrowing money to purchase a submersible water pump to ease the way of drawing water from the borehole. The pump is pedrolo one horse power pump. The market price in our country is 500 dollars. It will make my job easier and no waste of time.
I will repay using my income from the strawberries.
Thanks in advance.
